Your Australian graduate visa options
Overseas students who have recently completed a course in Australia may want to travel, return home or enter the job market via an Australia working visa. Though many foreign graduates may already be eligible for General Skilled Migration (GSM), others will have to gain further skills and experience to remain in Australia. The subclass 485 is an interim visa for Australia that allows applicants to remain in the country for up to 18 months to prepare for a GSM application. Those who are gifted may want to review our items on Distinguished Talent Visa as this is a fast route to PR. The Skilled Sponsored visa is another option.
Who can qualify for subclass 485
An overseas student applying for this temporary visa to Australia must be:
- Under 45 years of age (the upper age limit for GSM)
- Holding an eligible qualification, completed in the last six months after at least two years’ study in Australia
- Unable to achieve the pass mark on the points test for the Skilled Independent (Residence) visa
- Able to meet the Australian standards for an occupation on the Skilled Occupation List (SOL).
Benefits of the 485
Overseas graduates who obtain this visa can remain in Australia for as long as 18 months, without restrictions on work or study. It also permits the holder to add secondary applicants, including a partner or dependent child, either at the time or after the visa is granted. Holders of a visa subclass 485 may choose to:
- Improve their English language skills
- Complete a Professional Year – a structured professional development course that offers bonus points towards GSM
