UK Visa limit already reached for December

As predicted last month, the limit on Tier 1 UK visas has already been reached for December – just seven days into the month.

It’s a sign that the current interim cap on UK visas is inadequate, and will only create a huge backlog of applications by the time the full cap is introduced in April 2011.

Now that the cap on employment-based UK visas is out of the way, the Government is planning to turn its attentions to UK student visa levels.

Speculation suggests a 40 per cent cut could be on the cards. This will be achieved with strict new eligibility criteria making it far more difficult for student visas to be obtained.

The government is still hell-bent on its target of reducing net migration from 196,000 last year to “tens of thousands”, so student and family visas are expected to take the biggest hit in the coming months.

UK immigration cap recommendation not even halfway

The Migration Advisory Committee’s long-awaited report on the UK immigration cap was released yesterday with some sensible – yet largely ineffective – recommendations.

The report appeared to imply that the Government’s target of reducing net migration from 196,000 to “tens of thousands” was unrealistic.
