Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry has proposed the federal government grants work visas to illegal immigrants in the US. The program would be an alternative to the amnesty supported by other candidates, which would provide a path to citizenship for immigrants that do not hold a valid US visa.
Perry, currently Texas Governor, said in an interview with CNN last week that expecting authorities to arrest and deport millions of illegal immigrants isn’t realistic.

One bit of good news for graduate level skilled professionals wishing to work in the US is that there are still plenty of US H-1B visas available. This is an indication that the US economy is still not doing very well. Before 2008 in some years H-1Bs were used up almost as soon as they became available.
If you are an employer you can employ new professional level staff quite quickly. If you pay the premium processing fee it may be possible to bring in a new graduate level staff member within a few weeks. The earliest start date for an H-1B is 1 October 2011. Therefore employers and skilled workers no longer have to wait for the H-1B start date before starting work.

Immigration is still a hot topic in the USA, where the country remains firmly divided about how to approach USA immigration reform.
On the right, Republicans are calling for tougher enforcement measures, including more deportations and stronger border security.
On the left, Democrats want comprehensive immigration reforms to provide a pathway to citizenship for the millions of undocumented immigrants living in the country.
Amidst all the unrest is President Barack Obama, caught in a fierce tug-of-war as he tries to deliver on his promises to fix the broken immigration system.
This week the issue was back in the headlines as Obama made yet another promise to deliver his immigration reforms. However, more than two years after his initial promise, is patience wearing thin? Read the rest of this entry »

The Q Visa always seemed like an odd part of the US immigration system, designed solely for “Cultural Exchange” visitors. It has an extremely narrow set of eligibility criteria, available only to “employers who administer cultural exchange programs” to “facilitate the sharing of international cultures.”
It all makes sense, however, when you look at the statistics.
Every year more than 50 per cent of all Q visas are snapped up by the Walt Disney World employees.
The reason for this is simple: In a remarkable feat of corporate lobbying – even for the corporate-dominated American political system – Disney managed to pass legislation to create its very own US visa, tailored almost exclusively to meet their needs. Read the rest of this entry »

The term “illegal immigrant” has been the subject of much controversy in recent years. Overused by anti-immigration campaigners, the term has become a propaganda tool. Not only does it paint immigrants in a negative light, the term is inaccurate and misleading.
Now Australia is taking action against the term, holding media outlets accountable for their unwarranted use of “illegal immigrants” and its derivatives.
The US should take notice. The rampant overuse of the term by the country’s media outlets has only served to cloud the country’s on-going immigration debate.
Hopefully this pre-emptive strike in the Australian media will ward off similar overuse of the term down under. Read the rest of this entry »
