East Enders, Polish style – What’s all the drama about Londynczycy?

A Polish soap resembling East Enders could soon be coming to British tv.

Londynczycy, translated ‘Londoners’ depicts life in the city from the perspective of Polish immigrants.

With 1.2 million Polish immigrants currently living in the UK and roughly 200,000 in London, some of the plot lines have been drawn from real life stories told to writers by Poles living in Finchley.

The series features a history teacher who follows his wife and son to England but struggles to get a job and ends up drinking and sleeping rough on park benches.

A Polish builder who lives in Ealing being worked to the bone by his demanding boss and a blonde 25 year old who arrives in the capital with two ambitions: become a star and marry a rich (I like her already).

The programme, filmed at Ealing Studio, features loads of shots of Wembley Stadium, the London Eye and the Southbank Centre, and less glamourous shots of Victoria bus station and a Polish delicatessen.

Andrzej Szajna, the London-based producer of the series says all the scenarios are based on real situations. The baddies are all Poles, with Polish people screwing over Polish people, ‘Which is often the case in real life’.

In one scene a Polish girl is approached by other Poles with the promise of a good job in exchange for £100.

The program is broadcast on Polish TV today.

Has anyone seen the program, is it any good?

Are any of the stories lines familiar to you?

I have not seen the show, but I am hoping it is not another one of the ‘how grey polish imigrant’s live in london is.. oooh how poor his live is’. come on people- i am a londoner, and I am happy, I do not miss poland much, I am not a criminal, I earn money, I enjoy british road network, I enjoy the food- Indian, Chinese, Polish, French, Spanish, Italian- all in one city. Some of my mates feel about their lives here in similar way. some of them – not. I am just hoping the move is not only about those seconds… if it is- polish people in Poland- be aware – i would call it- a propaganda.

Thanks for your comments people. I reckon the show will be broadcast in the UK sometime in the future, the storylines sound interesting and with so many polish people here there’s probably enough interest to justify it. I think the problems and experiences facing poles are similar to a lot of other migrants going back through the decades and centuries, what’s interesting about this soap is that it’s set in present day.

My Polish beauty Kamila got me watching it, with her translating for me. I really enjoyed it and couldn’t wait to see the shows. Rumour has it there is going to be a 2nd series.

It really gave me an insight to what Polish life is like for those who have moved to the UK since it became part of the EU.

Well, what can I say…its not too bad. I have go to admit, there are some true stories in there, but some of them are abstracts! I understand, you need to make up some stories, to make it interestning, and make people watch it (like everywhere else, really). If you take it with distance, its fine:)
