US immigration: Uniting American Families Act (UAFA)

What is the Uniting American Families Act?

Immigration reform, a global topic

The Uniting American Families Act (UAFA) is a U.S. bill introduced to amend US immigration policy which currently discriminates against same-sex ‘permanent partners’. If passed, UAFA will allow permanent partners of legal U.S. citizens and permanent residents, including same-sex partners, to obtain a U.S. Green Card.

Presently, only the heterosexual spouses of U.S. citizens are granted citizenship.

A ‘permanent partner’ is classed as an individual 18 years of age or older who:

  • is in a committed, intimate relationship with another individual 18 years of age or older in which both parties intend a lifelong commitment;
  • is financially interdependent with that other individual;

  • is not married to or in a permanent partnership with anyone other than that other individual;
  • is unable to contract with that other individual a marriage cognizable under this Act; and
  • is not a first, second, or third degree blood relation of that other individual.

The term “permanent partnership” means the relationship that exists between two permanent partners.

What are your views on UAFA? Are you in a permanent partnership but not allowed to remain in the US legally, or perhaps you sit on the dark side of Miss California’s fence?

    Unbelievable that this is UAFA thing hasn’t yet passed. In EU we are millions of years ahead in equality issues guys, which I find unacceptable for the USA because they are the pioneers of equality and civil rights.

    I am American, in love with a British woman, I cannot believe this law has not passed here in the USA. My civil right as an American to love whomever I want is being taken away from me. I have to choose between living in my country, with my family members,, or living in Britain with the person I am deeply in love with and want to spend my life sharing experiences with.

    Obama could pass this law with one swipe of his pen….

    This should be passed and Americans in my position would not have their civil rights stripped from them, as is the case right now with the current law in place.

    Me and my loving partner Charlene (i am italain she is american) have neen living in england for the last 12 years and we have a very succesfull business.We had to choose to go away from america as our love was bigger then the law. We have reached freedom many times not yet on the right to love who we want male or female and I cannot believe we have still to claim these rights. I can only pray and see the finish line for all of us in exile….
