Immigrating to Canada through the Yukon provincial immigration service, as with Provincial Nominee Programmes in other Canadian provinces can provide a quicker route to work in Canada and permanent resident status.

And in some cases can offer a Canada immigration option to candidates who may not qualify under some of the federal business immigration services or other Canadian visa services.

Benefits

In Canada, migration through the Yukon Canadian Provincial Nomination Programme enables candidates to enter under one of two streams, as a skilled worker or through the Business Programme, with a further subdivision in each category.

Unlike some provincial routes in other territories, the Yukon system also provides some options which do not need an employer to apply on behalf of the applicant, in the manner of a Canadian work permit application.

Successful applicants will be awarded Canadian permanent residence which may lead, subject to a minimum residency requirement, to Canadian citizenship.

The Yukon nominee scheme does not require candidates to undergo a points based skills assessment.

Understanding the system

Candidates immigrating to Canada to commence living and working in the Yukon may apply under the Skilled Worker Programme or the Business Programme.

Both streams can be subdivided into two further categories.

Business programme - Entrepreneur

Under the self-employed stream, candidates may immigrate to Canada as an entrepreneur depending upon personal wealth and business experience.

In order to qualify under this category, applicants must:

Have a minimum net worth of CDN$250,000.
Be prepared to invest at least CDN$150,000 to establish or purchase a business.
Have visited the province at least once before submitting the application.
Possess a grasp of the fundamentals of either English or French.
Demonstrate sufficient business skills and experience in the relevant field to implement the proposal.

Business programme - Professional Self-Employed

The second category of the business programme is designed for candidates wishing to migrate to the Yukon as professional self-employed persons and does not require the minimum investment of the entrepreneur category.

However, candidates must be able to fulfil the following requirements.

The profession in question must be listed as having a skill shortage in the province.
Candidates must satisfy a certification or accreditation requirement for the profession and must be licensed by the relevant professional governing body if applicable.
Candidates must visit the Yukon in order to understand the province in terms of environmental, social and economic considerations.
Applicants must have sufficient resources to implement their proposal and to support themselves and any dependents for a period of six months.
A detailed business plan must also be forwarded.

Skilled Worker Program - Skilled Worker

Like the Business Programme, immigrating to the Yukon under the Skilled Worker Programme also offers two sub categories, for skilled workers and for critical impact employees.

Applicants for the skilled worker category must be able to provide:

A skill or trade in which the Yukon has a shortage.
Certification or accreditation for the profession. A license must also be provided if applicable.
A fundamental grasp of English or French.

Skilled Worker Programme - Critical Impact Employee

Unlike the other component parts of the Yukon nominee scheme, the critical impact employee category is employer based and requires an employee to apply for the candidate to be sponsored.

The category is intended to allow Yukon businesses to recruit key personnel who will contribute considerably to their operation.

In each case, the employer must be able to demonstrate that a candidate potentially migrating to the Yukon would make a significant positive contribution and must give details of the specialist skills and/or experience upon which the application is based.

Spouse Immigration and Dependent immigration

As with all Canadian Provincial nomination programmes, the Yukon nominee scheme is intended as a path to permanent settled status in Canada, and with this in mind, a successful applicant's spouse or partner and any dependent children are also permitted to migrate to Canada with them.
