A tunnel stretching into San Diego has been uncovered by US immigration officials

US immigration have discovered a cross-border tunnel stretching 1,000 feet from within Mexico and across the border into San Diego. The tunnel was discovered on Wednesday, officials say it had lighting, electrical systems and even an elevator in operation.

The tunnel, although not completed and no opening into US soil had yet been made, had been in construction for around 2 years, say US immigration officials.

When the tunnel was discovered, around the Otay Mesa Point of Entry in Mexico, 12 people were found to be inside and arrested, all suspects were believed to be from Mexico and no US arrests have been made.

The tunnel, which was created from within a warehouse, was under close guard last night by Mexican soldiers.

Cross-border tunnels are becoming more prevalent along the Mexican borders, 120 having been discovered, US immigration authorities say this is accountable to an increase in border patrol and smugglers having to adopt new methods in order to avoid detection.
