2000 deported by South Africa immigration last month

New figures released by South Africa immigration reveal that between the months of January and February of this year approximately 2000 illegal immigrants were deported from South Africa.

The statistics also show that 179 Zimbabweans were part of the figure of 2000. This is attributed to those being deported being convicted criminals as South Africa no-longer deports Zimbabweans.

The Zimbabwe deportees were taken from the Lindela Repatriation South African immigration detention centre in Johannesburg and through the border town at Beltbridge.

Charles Gwede, the assistant regional immigration manager at the South African Beitbridge Border Post said;

"South Africa no longer deports Zimbabwean border jumpers since the abolishment of visa requirements in May last year, but they still deport ex-convicts and since the beginning of the year we received 179 Zimbabwean ex-convicts who were brought back through Beitbridge Border Post."

The other deportees were taken by plane to their respected countries. They were mainly from Mozambique, Nigeria and Ghana.
