270,000 UK civil servants go on 48-hour strike
March 08 2010 by Liam Clifford
UK immigration staff based at Holyhead port in Wales will join other civil servants in a 48 hour walk out today, this is over a dispute about job cuts and re-imbursements made to staff for redundancy.
The action, which will have an effect on the ferries from the port, will see a total of 270,000 civil servants across the country go on strike, this will affect courts, job centres, tax offices and call centres across the country.
The action is the biggest disruption of the service since 1987, it is believed that further strikes are planned in the build up to the forthcoming general election.
The Public and Commercial Services union is protesting over alterations to the civil service redundancy scheme, it says the changes will mean staff lose up to a third of what they should receive when they leave the job.
It is expected that there will be large support for the strike today across all public service sectors that hire civil servants.
Staff at the Home Office and government departments will also join the walkout, meaning delays in fast-track UK visa applications.
