*Alex Ferguson considered emigrating to Canada*

November 20 2008 by Liam Clifford

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has spoken about the desire he once held to emigrate to Canada.

In an interview to mark his 50 years in football, Ferguson said he had seriously been considering emigrating to Canada in 1963 when he was juggling a toolmaker's job with a part-time forward's role at St. Johnstone. Disputes and transfer conflicts at the club led the young Ferguson to consider starting a new life abroad.

"I was a fully qualified tradesman," he said, "and the incentives of going to Canada were obvious. There was a good trade there."

Even though he had been offered a toolmaker's job in Canada, Ferguson turned down the opportunity when, a few weeks later, he scored a hat-trick for the Johnstone Club against the Rangers. At that time, working as a toolmaker in Canada would almost certainly have paid better money than starting out in professional football.

Ferguson's football golden jubilee was celebrated by his old Queen's Park colleagues at a dinner in Glasgow this week, although the guest of honour was not able to attend because his United team were playing a Carling Cup game.

Ferguson may have decided against moving to Canada for new life, but plenty of Brits decide in favour of it. In 2006, 6,500 British citizens chose to emigrate permanently to Canada, making Canada one of the UK's top ten emigration destinations.
