A Conservative government would limit UK immigration from 'skilled workers'
December 16 2009 by Liam Clifford
Tier 1 and 2 UK visas for skilled migrants would be overhauled if the Tories won the next general election.
Shadow Home Secretary, Mr. Chris Grayling, says that a Conservative Party Government will encourage 'tens of thousands of Immigrants' rather than the current level to come to Britain every year.
Under questioning from Labour MP Alan Johnson Grayling claimed that the Tories would bring in a ‘cap’ on UK immigration levels into Britain, highlighting figures that reveal more than 150,000 migrants entered the UK last year under the tier 1 and 2 category for skilled migrants. He said that the ‘Conservative government would seek to bring this number down to the tens of thousands, not the hundreds of thousands.’
This follows on from comments made by Tory London Mayor Boris Johnson’s that the tax-payer should pay for ‘all refugees in London to have English lessons.’
The statement by the shadow home secretary that they would limit UK immigration for skilled workers is a step beyond the measures Gordon Brown proposed last week. He announced changes to the tier 2 system but refrained from saying that there would be a cap put in place.
Commentators renounced the plans yesterday as a futile attempt by the Tories at capitalising on the swaying opinion of certain voters that UK immigration of this kind is some-how bad for the economy.
