Irish actor Liam Neeson has undergone US immigration following the death of his wife, actor Natasha Richardson.

The rush of condolences and sympathetic letters he received from Americans after the tragedy strengthened Neeson’s resolve to become a naturalised US citizen.

"That is partly the reason why I've recently become an American citizen," the actor said. "I'm still a proud Irishman, of course, but I've become an American citizen - I'm very proud of that."

Ms Richardson died in a ski accident in Quebec, Canada in March. The British Tony award-winning actor appeared fine directly after her fall, but suffered an epidural haematoma which caused her condition to rapidly deteriorate.

Her family made the painful decision to take her off life support at the New York clinic where she was treated.

The American acting community was a strong source of support for Neeson after the death of Ms Richardson, who had also taken up work in the US and become an American citizen.
