US student visa holders to get cost-cutting advice
Several universities in the US have reported a fall in the number of US visa holders coming to study in the US this summer as a consequence of the global economic downturn. However, experts claim there are ways to save money while studying abroad.
Sue Lorenz, the director of the Office of Study Abroad (OSA) says: “Studying abroad does not always cost as much as you think ...it all depends on where you go. Some countries may be more expensive than others. Programs are offered in different countries depending on the students’ willingness to pay.”
One student from the US, who decided to get a US visa and study abroad recommends staying with a host family while studying in Australia, the US, the UK or Canada. He says that staying with a family who will charge minimal rent and will provide meals can make studying abroad cheaper than studying at home.
Another US student who moved to the UK to study at Cambridge says her fee included her bus to college, her room, board and books, which helped her to cut down on extra costs.
Many student work visa holders claim they have economised during the recession by saving and cutting back on items that would be more expensive during prosperous times, such as flights, clothes and meals out.
