Recession affects Australian visa holders

Due to the effects of the recession on Australia, an increasing number of Australia 457 visa holders are being made redundant.  This is also means that that they are forced to leave the country.

The 457 visa for Australia is the long stay business visa.  It allows people to move to Australia and stay there for up to four years as long as they are in employment.

One of the most popular visas sought by visitors to Australia, it works on the premise that the employer acts as a sponsor for the visa.

However, as more employers lose their jobs in the economic downturn, they are also losing their right to live in Australia.

There are three options available for holders of the 457 visa who are made redundant:

1. Find a new job where the employer is willing to act as sponor and apply for a new 457 visa.
2. Apply for a different type of visa.  For example, a student visa would allow for study in Australia and a holiday visa allows for a short visit, but does not allow employment.
3. Leave Australia within the 28 day deadline.
