Australia immigration has revised their approach to the skilled migrant programme, the minister for immigration, Chris Evans, has announced plans to change certain areas of the scheme.
The changes are an attempt by the Australian authorities to attract more of the skilled workers the country needs. It has been stated by the immigration authorities in Australia that the system that had been in place had become a vehicle for those entering low-level education institutions in order to gain permanent residency.
The professions that have been singled out as not particularly helping the Australian economy and being used more as a ‘soft option’ for migration were hairdressing and cooking.
The immigration minister unveiled today a new list of occupations that would be replacing the old blueprint, which he said had been re-focussed from educational courses to skills.
“This is about making sure the people who come in on the migration programme have the skills we need, have the English levels we need and can get a job in that skilled area.” He said at a press conference today.
The new changes will not affect those wishing to study in Australia, who then wish to return to their country after completing the course.
