Australian 2 Day Skills Needs Expo In London
18/03/2008
UK's Skills drainage continues to be threatened, as Australian skills search vendors try to lure more Brits to the Outback's.
The Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, Senator Chris Evans, said the 2008 Australia Needs Skills expo will link Australian employers with prospective skilled migrants who are mainly young, highly qualified and English speaking people. Australian government held a "needs skills expo" in London. Recruiters and government agencies arrived prepared and equipped to lure IT specialists to Australia.
Earlier this year the Australian government released Australia's big 17 most wanted lists outlining their need for specific skills including mechanics and IT specialist to name just a few.
'Australia is this year seeking more than 100 000 people in its skilled migration stream including accountants, engineers, health professionals and trades people,' Senator Evans said. 'These expos link Australian employment specialists including state and territory governments, regional bodies and businesses with skilled workers.
"Employer-sponsored migration is a high priority in a skilled migration stream which has economic benefits for everyone in Australia," he said, adding that nearly 25,000 British workers arrived in Australia between 2006 and 2007 through the skilled migration scheme.
According to the Senator there are skilled vacancies in all states and territories in more than 90 occupations.
More than 4000 prospective skilled migrant workers were registered to meet Australian exhibitors at the London Expo.
The office of the Minister of Australia's Immigration and Citizenship confirmed that the expo included a Western Australian automotive engineering firm seeking to recruit 50 skilled mechanics; a Melbourne-based healthcare recruitment firm looking for doctors, nurses and allied health professionals; a recruitment firm acting on behalf of WA local governments; and a Canberra organisation aiming to recruit a range of skilled workers.
Why Australia
According to Erin Ryan of http://www.globalvisas.com/, "Australia is becoming more and more popular because of the alternative lifestyle it offers and because they have a huge demand of all skills. For many Brits immigrating there is an exciting step, their savings are doubled offering them a wide range of investment choices. Whether buying a car or buying property. The climate is great and the route to permanent residency is a lot simpler than in the UK or the US".
The Australian's immigration data on the inflow of foreign-born population by country of birth the United Kingdom has seen an influx of Brits in Australia. Britons make up about 17.7 % of all foreign immigrants to Australia and there has been a large increase in workers in the last six months about 6130 followed by India at 3670 in various industries.
'Employer-sponsored migration is a high priority in a skilled migration stream which has economic benefits for everyone in Australia says the Minister.
A total of 24 800 British people arrived in Australia in the 2006-07 under the skilled migration scheme.
'Skilled British people who move to Australia help meet demands for workers including professional workers, nurses, electricians, carpenters and joiners, motor mechanics, bricklayers, fitters, computer professionals, school teachers and plumbers,' Senator Evans said.
In February 2008 www.globalvisas.com ran a story on the Australian government launching an aggressive campaign and advertising reminiscent of the Poms 1m Britons who were lured down under with the £10 assisted-passage scheme, skilled trade's people and professionals are once again being targeted.
Reports will be released at a later stage to determine if the Expo managed to achieve its goal, to fill Australia's skills shortage.
