Australian immigration: Working holiday visa market bouyant
April 28 2009 by Robbie Ragless
The Australian Tourism Export Council (ATEC) has announced that the Credit Crunch has not dampened the market for young people to throw themselves into an adventure of a lifetime, travelling and working in Australia.
Some tourism, such as long-haul luxury trips and expensive city breaks, have become less popular as people try to save their money for impending emergencies. However, backpacking is as popular, if not more popular, than ever.
Often considered a budget option, backpacking around Australia or New Zealand is a great way to see another country and a working holiday visa allows young people aged between 18 and 30 to work temporarily to boost their travelling funds.
ATEC’s Managing Director, Matt Hingerty, says, “the backpacker market is absolutely booming, we've seen visa applications up by 20 per cent out of Germany and Britain alone, and those figures are translating into business.”
It is thought that the boom may be due to young people finding it increasingly difficult to find work in the UK. Many are deciding that their best option is to spend a year working in Australia while they wait for the economic storm to lift.
