Constitution day is tomorrow
The Australian immigration department is preparing to celebrate Constitution Day tomorrow with several ceremonies to welcome Australian visa holders as new citizens.
A spokesperson for the department stated, “As we recognise this
important date, Constitution Day is also a fitting occasion to welcome new
Australian citizens who will contribute to Australia’s future.”
In the
coming few days there will be a total of 500 new citizens from 70 countries
awarded citizenship in a number of ceremonies across the country. The department
stated, “These special Constitution Day ceremonies will give our nation’s newest
citizens an opportunity to acknowledge that they understand and respect what it
means to become Australians.”
The ceremonies will take place in Sydney,
Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Canberra and Brisbane.
One couple who are
becoming citizens are Camilla and David Shaw who moved to Australia from the UK
in 2003. Mrs Shaw told the Australian immigration department, “I love living in
Australia. I have always felt a part of the country. It is a privilege and an
honour to become an Australian citizen. I am Scottish by birth and Australian by
choice.”
