Senator Evans discusses Australian immigration
The Ministerial Council for Immigration and Cultural affairs met on Friday in Canberra. Discussion covered changing the temporary work visa program to make it more flexible so it can suit market needs.
The meeting was hosted by the Government of the Australian Capital Territory. They discussed changing the temporary work visa program so that it can be fashioned to suit market needs on a more immidiate basis.
During the meeting the council reaffirmed its commitment to discuss issues, share information and consideralso proposals regarding the national migration program. They acknowledged that immigration is a tool to be used to fill skills shortages for the benefit of the country by attracting the right sort of people to move and work in Australia.
It became apparent that although Australia has largely managed to avoid the financial crisis, the number of temporary skilled Australia visas has been significantly affected by it.
The council also received briefings on a range of other matters, including national research projects and initiatives concerning cultural diversity.
