Australian immigration releases three-year plan
May 26 2009 by Robbie Ragless
A new three-year plan has been released by the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC), which will work to highlight the benefits generated through allowing immigrants to work in Australia.
According to DIAC secretary, Andrew Metcalfe, the Strategic Plan 2009-2012 will act as a framework for the department and all those who work within it. “It will guide the work we all do in our nation-building role, serving as a reminder that the work the department does today will have ongoing economic and social benefits that will grow and develop over many years,” says Metcalfe.
Metcalfe explained that the new strategy includes plans for the DIAC to report to parliament on six areas including the promotion of Australian citizenship among people who relocate to Australia. Previously there were only two reporting areas.
The six areas also include: protecting refugees and contributing to international humanitarian policy, border management, supporting migrants and refugees when relocating to Australia and making fair decisions about how people enter and leave Australia.
Metcalfe says the increase in the number of reporting areas will ensure the department remains responsible for making sure that Australian immigration policy remains beneficial to the Australian people.
