Australian immigration seeking IT professionals

April 28 2009 by Gareth McConnell

The largest recruiter for the technology sector in Australia has announced plans to recruit up to 200 IT workers per year after coming to an agreement with the Federal government.

With a network of agencies throughout the country, Peoplebank, is one of the few local IT recruitment company’s offering overseas workers in the IT professional the opportunity to live and work in Australia.

The agreement paves the way for Australian immigration to process work visas for IT workers who meet the criteria of temporary business 457 visa program.

Chief operating officer Peter Acheson says since changes to Australian immigration regulations in October 2007, it has been difficult to bring skilled workers in on the 457 visas.

"There has been a bit of latent demand created as a result of the fact that we haven't been able to bring people in over the past year," Mr Acheson said.

"Some of the people we will put in place over the next few months will be soaking up that demand.

"I think probably somewhere between 150 and 200 a year would be the sort of number we will get to."

Since the global economic downturn, there has been a demand for overseas workers to fill specific ‘skill-tight’ roles.

Mr Acheson said the company would look to attract .NET programers, Java and J2EE programmers to work in Australia before moving onto other emerging technologies.
