Australian immigration seminar proves popular in Dublin
January 27 2010 by Liam Clifford
The Citywest Hotel in Dublin transformed into an Australian paradise at the weekend as hundreds flocked to find out more about moving to Australia.
The
Australian Information Day seminar was held in the Irish city to give people
thinking of starting a new life in Australia some practical advice.
One
couple, Sandra and Gerry Brooks, attended the seminar after deciding a life in
Oz could be a good move for their young family. Sandra explained, “we went on a
working holiday visa to Melbourne and Sydney about a decade ago and we’re sorry
we ever came back.”
Sandra had a typical story of recent life in Ireland,
struggling to find a job and finding housing frustratingly expensive. Thousands
of people have moved to Australia from Ireland and the UK in recent years to
escape the UK weather, find cheaper, better housing and make the most of
Australia’s climate and healthy job market.
Another popular option for
younger people is the Australian working holiday visa. The Dublin event included
a stand aimed specifically at students wanting to experience living in Australia
and working temporarily to fund their stay.
Gerry Brooks summed up the
feeling among many of the people attending the seminar when he said, “I don’t
think there is a future for us here, with lots of unemployment. We also want to
emigrate for our children as much as ourselves.”
