Students on Australia visa to march at Sydney
Foreign students studying in Australia are planning to march in Sydney next month. They hope to raise awareness internationally and increase pressure on governments to help students who are victims of faults in the education system.
There has been plenty of press recently about violence against some Indian students and about fraudulent Australian immigration agencies, which help students to gain student visas for study in fake institutions.
The students’ concerns are echoed by the Australian government which has already revealed measures to prevent people using student visas simply as a means to becoming permanent residents.
The international student market in Australia is worth some A$15.5 billion a year and students and the government are keen to protect its reputation and ensure genuine students are being treated fairly and get a quality education while living in Australia.
Thousand of students will take to the streets of Sydney for the rally on 2 September. The march will begin at the University of Sydney and end outside Parliament House.
The President of the National Union of Students, David Barrow, said the march symbolises the need to protect the 500,000 students who move to Australia to study each year.
