Working holiday Australian visas holders have taken to camping on the streets outside branches of STA Travel around the UK in order to grab a £10 bargain flight to Australia.

Tents and sleeping bags have been lining the streets outside major branches of STA Travel, the student travel specialist, over the past few days. Many of those queuing were hoping to get a cheap flight for their trip travelling and working in Australia on ‘gap years.’

This new ‘£10 Pom’ offer harks back to the post-Second World War offer that convinced thousands of Brits to move to Australia for a fee of just £10.

Just 150 £10 one-way tickets were available and were be sold on a first-come-first-served basis in eight STA Travel stores from 8am today.

The offer is to celebrate STA Travel’s 30th birthday and is likely also to highlight the opportunity for 18 to 30 year olds to travel and work temporarily in Australia for up to a year.

The 12-month working holiday visa is offered as part of a reciprocal arrangement between the UK and Australia. Temporary work permit holders often help to fill skills shortages in seasonal industries such as agriculture and tourism.
