New plans are emerging in Australia to direct new immigrants to certain locations to help ease urban congestion.

Tony Burke, the Sustainable Population Minister, has outlined plans for new cities and bigger regional capitals, to help control urban sprawl and congestion problems.

He explained to Sky News that certain cities are over-populated as a result of the fact that immigrating to Australia has been so popular and easy for many generations. He says there is now a need to direct newcomers moving to Australia to areas of Western Australia where new communities can be built.

He also mentioned that directing newcomers to places like Townsville and other cities that can become a 'second tier' beyond the existing major capitals like Sydney and Melbourne. Burke spoke positively about, "places like Townsville and the vision that the Queensland government has of effectively establishing a second capital in the north."

The new approach to town planning comes in response to Prime Minister Julia Gillard’s outlook on Australian immigration. She claims she does not want the population of the country to reach the 40 million point predicted. However, she has so far failed to set new targets in terms of population growth, or change Australian immigration restrictions to reduce the number of people moving to Australia.
