Lady Scotland in UK visa scandal

Baroness Scotland fined in UK visa row

Baroness Scotland, Attorney General for the government, was fined £5,000 yesterday after hiring an illegal immigrant to work in the UK.

The UK’s most senior law officer was unrepentant, dismissing the ruling and her part in wrongfully employing a Tongan housekeeper as a “technical error”.

Gordon Brown expressed concern in the media over the UK visa scandal but stated that “no further action” would be taken against the Baroness over the matter.

Scotland was fined £5,000 by the UK Border Agency for failing to keep copies of her former housekeeper Loloahi Tapui’s right to work in the UK. The scandal is further embarrassingly for Scotland as she was the Home Office minister who was behind the strict new UK immigration laws.

Speaking after the Border Agency’s decision, Baroness Scotland said she accepted “absolutely” the ruling.

The fine was half the maximum amount as Scotland had no history of em-ploying illegal immigrants previously.
