Baroness Warsi pledges to solve UK visa problems for Pakistanis
July 20 2010 by Liam Clifford
Conservative minister, Baroness Warsi, has told officials in Pakistan that the UK immigration authorities will work to solve the problems faced by Pakistanis when applying for UK visas.
Speaking at an Islamabad
reception hosted by Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif yesterday,
Warsi claimed that she understood the problems facing UK visa applicants from
Pakistan. As terrorist activity grows within Pakistan, UK immigration officials
are increasingly strict on the issuance of UK visas for Pakistani nationals.
However, Warsi says the government now hopes to find a solution to this
problem, and will focus on issuing student visas to Pakistani young people who
want to live in the UK during school or university years.
Minister
Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif, meanwhile, said that he hoped Warsi’s visit will help
to cement relationships between the two countries.
Warsi also set out
plans to help Pakistani immigrants to settle in Britain and to be more involved
in the local communities.
Also attending the event were the British High
Commissioner in Pakistan, Adam Thomson, Political Counsellor, Chris Sainty, and
other British delegates working in the country. Several other members of the
Pakistani government were also present.
