Black History Month organisers celebrate UK immigration
February 02 2010 by Liam Clifford
The chair of London’s Back History Month, Christina Lord, says that the event is an opportunity to celebrate UK immigration and the impact black people living in the UK have had on society.
Black History Month events will take place
throughout February and celebrations kicked off at the Museum of London at the
weekend. Lord welcomed all the young people who had gathered to mark the
occasion, stating, "Because we are here, celebrating Black History Month, but
history keeps on rolling on. And so years from now, you will be the history we
are talking about."
She also took the opportunity to mention how UK
immigration, and particularly the black people who had moved to the UK, have
impacted the country and made it what it is today. She said, "Immigration has
changed things such that the diversity in London of people from the African
diaspora will continue to change the way Black History Month is
celebrated.”
Some of the events taking place this month include a
performance by the Congress of Black Women at the Wolf Performance Hall on
Wednesday at 7pm and a closing gala in the same space on 26 February at 6:30pm.
