Blind student Australian visa holder among top performers
January 04 2010 by Liam Clifford
Student Australian visa holder, who is an immigrant from Indonesia and is also blind, has gone on to come top in her course in the Australian HSC exams.
Ria
Andriani only moved to Australia in 2007 and has had to learn English by Braille
due to her disability over the past two years.
Andriani came top among
the Indonesian background speakers in her region of New South Wales after
overcoming her setbacks to prove that, given the chance to study in Australia,
immigrants can perform exceptionally well at school, college and
beyond.
New South Wales’ Premier Kristina Kelly said that Ria’s
achievements were "inspiring" and "remarkable".
The student was modest
about her award at a ceremony in Sydney to mark the top 119 students undertaking
the HNC. She said, "I didn't expect to be top in the state." "I typed the
answers into a laptop. It's much easier I guess, because people type quicker
than they write with their hand."
Student Australian visa holders, young people
whose families had moved to Australia from abroad and Australian citizens all
had to wait for their results last month as they were released in mid December
to much anticipation.
