In a move that is intended to help attract world class researchers to study and work in Canada, the government is investing CA$2 billion in its post-secondary educational institutions.

The investment is part of the government’s Knowledge Infrastructure Program, which in turn is included in the wider Economic Action Plan. It will enhance infrastructure at Canada’s educational institutions including community college and universities and is intended to help boost Canada’s science and technology industries.

Gary Goodyear, the minister of state for science and technology, says the investment package will improve Canada’s ability to attract the best talent from around the world secure their Canada study visa to study there and eventually work in the country’s science and technology industries. He explains, "our government's investment provides significant short-term economic stimulus in local communities throughout Quebec, while at the same time strengthening Canada's long-term capacity for research and innovation...The renewal of college and university facilities will encourage more world-class researchers to work in Canada and give them the tools they need to make more discoveries that will benefit Canadians and people around the world."

Part of the investment program will create job for Canadians and Canadian visa holders to work as technicians, engineers, architects and tradespeople.
