Brit wins Australian work visa for best job in the world

Ben Southall

A British man has won ‘the best job in the world’ according to Tourism Queensland. He beat 34,000 applicants from countries all over the world, to win the chance to work in Australia on a deserted island, keeping a blog and getting paid £73,500.

34-year-old Ben Southall from Hampshire's blogs and video diaries are expected to convey the fantastic lifestyle that people on working holiday visas can expect when they head down under.

Ben will move to Australia and be based on Hamilton Island in the Great Barrier Reef. His official post will be ‘caretaker’ but he will also write a regular blog to keep readers up to date on his unusual way of life.

The job description set out by Tourism Queensland requires Southall to “explore the islands of the Great Barrier Reef, swim, snorkel, make friends with the locals and generally enjoy the tropical Queensland climate and lifestyle".

The competition was launched in January 2009 in the middle of winter for many applicants. Although the organisers were expecting a lot of applications from the Northern Hemisphere the idea captured the imagination of tens of thousands of people from over 200 countries around the would.

The job advert was viewed from almost every country in the world with the exception of a few African nations and North Korea.
