Business expert says encouraging Australian immigration is important

Business Day contributing editor Michael Pascoe says the job market in Australia is still extremely healthy but says immigration is still important to the country.
Pascoe says that in terms of filling skills gaps caused by a lack of domestic investment in skills and education, immigration is vital to Australia’s future. This echoes similar views from experts who claim the country needs to encourage foreigners to take Australian work visas and temporary work permits to fill labour shortages, particularly in 'in demand' professions and seasonal industries.
Although there have been some reports that Australia’s job market is suffering a little as a result of the recession, Pascoe says the market is healthier than many think. The number of jobs available, compared to the number available during the absolute peak time for Australian jobs, is only down by 0.34 per cent. Pascoe says that this small fall, in light of a global economic crisis, is ‘incredibly good’.
He also points out that the number of monthly hours worked in Australia is down by a minimal 2.6 per cent. Pascoe says that this, combined with the fact that many workers have a higher rate of disposable income as a result of lower interest rates, suggests Australia’s economy remains relatively healthy.
It is clear that moving to work in Australia is still a good option for British workers and graduates who are struggling to find jobs in the UK.
