Canada Calling In More Highly Skilled Immigrants
12/02/2008
Canada's labour market sees a downfall in unemployment rate while it continues to celebrate its economic growth with the help of skilled migrant workers.
According to Statistics Canada, the labour market was stunned over the nation's reduced unemployment rate. Canada's unemployment rate fell to a 33-year low of 5.8% last month, bringing Canada's job growth over the past year to 337,000.
January has seen 46,400 vacancies being advertised, more than four times as many as anticipated. Meanwhile, British Columbia's employment rate has hit a record high of 63.9% with an increase of 12,000 jobs.
Many of the advertised vacancies are requesting skilled migrants from overseas as Canada doesn't have enough of their own workers to fill them. Statistics Canada have shown in its monthly labour force survey that gains in January were widespread across a number of industries, most notably in professional, scientific and technical services as well as in construction.
"Overall employment gains were tempered by decreases in information, culture and recreation, as well as in retail and wholesale trade," Statistics Canada reported.
Statistics Canada said the net total of new jobs were in the private sector's full-time positions, presenting the perfect opportunity for highly skilled foreign workers considering immigration to Canada.
There were record employment rates in Alberta, B.C., Newfoundland and Labrador, with Alberta leading the country with an unemployment rate of 3.2. This is followed by Manitoba at 3.8, Saskatchewan at 3.9 and B.C. at 4.1.
Major increases were seen in the accommodation and food services sector which grew by nearly 2,000 people, employing a total of 17,000, while the scientific and technical sector also saw a growth by about 2,000 to employ 15,500 people.
There is good news for workers; the hourly pay rose by 4.9% in January from a year ago, matching the previous month's pace, which was the fastest since at least 1998. Canada continues to open up its doors for skilled migrants and the Canadian government has many ways of integrating migrants into the country. Overseas nationals can of course enjoy the booming economy and beautiful surroundings that Canada has to offer.
