Canada immigrants are welcomed says OECD

According to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Canada is the most likely of the Western democratic countries to support Canadian immigrants.

John Martin, the OECD’s director for employment, says Canada is a "country of permanent settlement", in that most people move to the country are intending to settle in Canada for the long term and eventually become Canadian citizens.

The Canada immigration department has introduced several measures to try to help immigrants settle in the country and find work in Canada. According to the OECD, these types of programmes are important to help immigrant communities to flourish in economic downturns and contribute more to society.

Martin added that where nations are considered 'countries of permanent residence’, immigration backlashes are less likely as immigrant communities are not seen as temporary. Martin says people also move to Australia, the US and New Zealand with a long-term view to remaining in these countries."Canadians don't see [Canada immigrants] as hostile. They aren't seen as 'taking our jobs,'" adds Martin.

Jason Kenney, the Canada immigration minister, has spoken out against the media rhetoric that “pits immigrants against Canadians.”

The OECD is funded by 29 member countries and provides governments with social and economic policy advice.
