Canada to re-instate visas for Hungary
October 09 2009 by Liam Clifford
Hungary is now the main source country for asylum seekers in Canada, Canadian immigration officials have said.
Hungary’s visa-free relationship with Canadian immigration officials may be coming to an end. A recent surge in asylum seekers, from Hungary, has not gone down well with the Canadian immigration authorities, who have this week said visa-requirements for Hungarian citizens may well be put back in place.
Of course these sanctions have already been imposed on visitors from the Czech Republic and Mexico. According to Canadian immigration authorities, 750 Hungarian foreign nationals claimed asylum once they arrived in Canada, 578 of those were in the period April 1 to June 30.
Canadian officials are hopeful that the situation may be resolved in a less severe manner and have said that they do not wish to revoke the current visa-free travel from Hungary unless forced to. They have called on Budapest to take action against possible organized gangs, as Hungary now stands as Canada's top refugee source country.
