The Canadian Tamil Congress is urging the Canadian government to launch efforts to allow Tamils caught up in the crisis in Sri Lanka to work in Canada and join their relatives.

Many Tamils with a Canada visa have relatives in the former war zone who have been displaced and are thought to be suffering. They are keen to see their families settled in Canada where they would be safe, says the Congress.

As a compassionate nation, our government should take serious concentration to bring them in and reunite these families,” said one man whose family is in Sri Lanka.

According to a spokesperson for Canadian immigration minister, Jason Kenney, the government is “doing its part to mitigate the humanitarian catastrophe, as well as support Tamil-Canadians hoping to be reunited with their families.” The government has already sped up the processing of family class Canada visa applications from Sri Lanka to minimise the siffering among th families of Tamil-Canadians.

The government says it is unlikely to install a fast-track asylum system for Tamils as this would only detract from its efforts to help those who are currently in the process of applying for Canadian visas.
