Canadian immigration provides funding for childrens hospital
April 27 2009 by Bryan Palmer
The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, which treats children of families who have moved to Canada to start a new life, has received CA$9.2 million in funding from the government.
The facility will provide improved health services for newcomers and may well be the first contact with the health service for people who are relocating to Canada from abroad.
Canadian Immigration minister, Jason Kenney, says the hospital, colloquially known as 'SickKids', is a “vital resource” for the immigrants community living in Canada. He adds, this Government is committed to helping make the integration easier for newcomers. When we invest in these kinds of projects, we are investing in the future of all Canadians.”
The new funding will be spent on establishing a specialist immigrants support network and will help to pay for extra support for newcomers. As part of the scheme, all health education articles will be translated into the languages most used by the immigrant population and will be available on the internet and as audio files.
The hospital’s CEO and president, Mary Jo Haddad says, “SickKids is thrilled to partner with Citizenship and Immigration on creating accessible health information for new immigrant families in Ontario.”
