Canadian immigration releases video highlighting citizenship changes

April 14 2009 by Robbie Ragless

Canadian immigration minister, Jason Kenney, has launched a video called ‘Waking Up Canadian’, to inform people about changes to the Citizenship Act, which come into force on 17 April 2009.

Waking Up Canadian features a man waking up on 17 April to find that he is now an official Canadian citizen due to the changes to the Act. His room is filled with traditional Canadian objects and symbols such as flags, a beaver, a moose and a hockey player.

The changes to the Act are intended to restore Canadian citizenship for people who have had theirs questioned in the past or who were affected by legislation that has now been changed.

An official statement from Minister Kenney said, ”in enacting this law, parliament gave its unanimous support to extending the privilege of Canadian citizenship to many who lost it or who never had it due to outdated legislation. Because of this legislation, the government can take concrete action to help many who had their citizenship questioned in the past.”

Those who lost their citizenship in the past will have it restored from the date they lost it. The new laws will also prevent citizenship from being passed to more than one generation living outside Canada, in order to protect the value of Canadian citizenship.
