Canada immigration takes on visa fraud in India

The Canadian government is turning directly to foreign governments, in a move that is intended to reduce the number of fraudulent Canadian visa applications.
Canada immigration minister, Jason Kenney, says the government has asked India, China and the Philippines to clamp down on immigration fraud. To do this, they are being asked to focus more attention and resources on tracking immigration fraudsters and sharing information with Canada.
Jason Kenney is due to spend three days in India this week, on a mission to move immigration counter-fraud towards the top of the Indian government’s priorities. He will repeat the call for more cooperation to root out the fraudsters when he visits China and the Philippines.
The issue has become increasingly problematic for India and Canada in recent years as large numbers of Indians looking to move to Canada are conned into paying thousands of dollars for immigration services. Fraudulent immigration agents also supply prospective migrants with fake documents that they then use to apply for Canadian work visas.
Through a greater level of information sharing, it is hoped that the Canadian government, together with the Indian government, can stamp out the problem - protecting Canadian borders and Indian nationals who are hoping to settle in Canada.
