Canadian universities are attracting more American and overseas students on study visas because of cheaper education fees and high quality education.

Last year over 9,000 Americans applied for a Canadian study visa, up from 2,300 in 1995 and overall, 176,000 international students currently study in Canada.

The hike in numbers has been reported in response to increased marketing and recruitment campaigns as universities try to build more international student campus.

"Canadian universities are like hidden gems," says one American student at Dalhousie University in Halifax.  "A lot of them are Ivy League-quality schools and they are just a lot less expensive."

Although Canadian study permits and fees are more expensive for international students, the figure is still significantly lower than studying in the USA, with savings of literally tens of thousands of dollars.

A University of Toronto official believes the number of Americans applying for a Canadian student visa has tripled because of economic and political figures, along with the strength of the Canadian dollar.
