Canadian visa requirement may be imposed for Hungarians

Hungarians flock to Canada to claim asylum, Canada may be forced to impose visa conditions.
Canadian
visa requirements may be imposed on Hungary in a move intended to stem the flow
of refugee applicants trying to move to Canada.
The Canadian immigration
authorities claim that the numbers of refugee applications from the Roma
community of Hungary are getting too high.
The introduction of visa
requirements would be the third such move by Canada within the past year - after
it imposed similar requirements on Mexico and the Czech Republic.
The
European Union (EU) is unlikely to support any such Canadian visa requirement as
it already expressed concerns about the sanctions against the Czech Republic.
However, according to the Canadian Immigration and Refugee Board, the number of
refugee applications from the Roma community has soared since the spring,
following a steady rise from Spring 2008, when visa requirements for Hungary
were lifted after it became a member of the EU.
Canadian immigration minister Jason Kenney has expressed concern about the rising number of asylum
seekers wishing to move to Canada. Hungary is among the top three sources of
refugee claims as numbers have risen from 20-40 a month to over 200 a month.
