Canadian visa restrictions lead to plummeting Mexican visitor numbers
December 17 2009 by Liam Clifford
Canada visitor numbers fall after Canada Visa restricitons are placed on citizens from Mexico.
There has been a significant fall in the number of Mexicans
visiting Canada since the country brought in new Canadian visa rules for
Mexicans earlier this year.
Statistics Canada figures show that the
number of Mexicans visiting Canada has fallen by 63.3 per cent in the past year.
Much of the fall has been attributed to the new Canada visa restrictions imposed on
Mexico in July.
In addition to the figures from Mexico, the report also
shows that the number of US citizens visiting Canada dropped slightly, by 2.6
per cent, with declines measured in both overnight stays and single daytrips
over the border.
However, overnight stays among travellers from countries
other than the US rose by 3.2 per cent to 332,000 visits – the highest number in
six months.
The number of Canadians travelling abroad fell by 1 per cent
over the October-October period, while the number of trips by Canadians to the
US stayed stable, rising by just 0.1 per cent.
In addition to the
Canadian tourist visas taken out each year, thousands of people move to Canada on a permanent basis. After visiting Canada as a tourist, many people are won
over by its charms and decide that a life living and working in Canada would be
good for them and their families.
