Chamber of Commerce on Canada immigration
The Canadian Chamber of Commerce says the current Canadian immigration policies are not enabling firms to bring in enough foreigners to work in Canada to meet labour shortages.
A letter to Prime Minister Harper, from Perrin Beatty, the CEO of the Chamber of Commerce, states, 'the well-being of every Canadian citizen depends on how quickly the new government addresses the current global economic turmoil'.
The Chamber claims current Canadian immigration policies are too focused on short-term solutions to labour market shortages. It claims that the Canadian work visa policies are not safeguarding the country’s economic future.
Tina Kremmidas, senior economist with the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, says that immigrants settling in Canada and those trying to find work in Canada need to make sure they use all the services at their disposal. The Canadian governemnt has invested millions of dollars in providing language training and and other settlement services to newcomers to hep them find work and to become part of a community.
The Chamber of Commerce is calling for more information on shortage occupations to be gathered from different Canadian regions. It says that Canadian immigration policy should be flexible to enable Canada work visas to be granted in response to specific shortages in specific regions.
