Chamber of Commerce concerned over Australian immigration discussion
July 22 2010 by Liam Clifford
The Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Australia is concerned that Western Australia’s skills shortage may worsen as a result of concerns over the country’s growing population.
The region’s businesses are currently reliant on Australian work visa holders as there is a major skills shortage in the area. Nathan Taylor,
the business policy manager at the Chamber said that any problems
arising from population growth was down to poor state government, not
growing immigration.
He explained that Western Australia’s economy is growing, but that this
is reliant on the continued influx of immigrants wanting to work in
Australia.
He added that the current temporary Australian work visa policy may not
be adequate to keep the region’s companies thriving. “Our concern is
that those skills that are in demand here in Western Australia won't be
able to be drawn on through the temporary migration system," he
explained.
Peter Collier, the Minister for Training, assured Western Australia that
the government will continue to let people move to Australia for work.
He said, "We need and we will continue to need skilled migration both
from overseas and interstate."
