Chinese emigrating to South Africa benefit the country
October 16 2009 by Liam Clifford
Immigration into South Africa by Chinese nationals has seen a benefit to the country and infastructure.
The influx of Chinese emigrating to South Africa is benefitting the country,
according to Independent columnist Ian Burrill.
According to the Centre
for Chinese Studies at Stellesboch University in South Africa, immigration to South Africa and more importantly direct investment
from Chinese companies in Africa was up during the first half of the year. Investment increased to
£345 million, almost twice the amount invested in the same period of
2008.
Burrill describes China’s decision to seek raw materials from
Africa to feed the country’s growth as one of the most important geo-political
moves of recent decades. As a result of this desire for Africa’s raw materials,
the Chinese have emigrated to South Africa and improved infrastructure in the
country.
In addition to this investment, the immigration into South Africa has also seen an influx of new Chinese
companies and products. This has provided more competition within South Africa, thus
driving down prices and increasing consumer choice.
The West has largely
ignored Africa as an investment opportunity and has spent little on developing
infrastructure to improve trade and industry. However, the Chinese have
identified the potential in countries like South Africa and their investment
will enhance the country and make it more attractive to immigrants,
entrepreneurs and South African work visa holders from around the world.
