Citizenship resource teaches kids about Australian immigration

New resource to help Australian teachers inform students of immigration.
The Australian immigration department has announced the release of a
new educational resource kit to help teachers inform children about Australian
citizenship.
The new school resource book 'I am Australian: Exploring
Australian Citizenship' is intended to help teachers deliver more information to
upper primary and lower secondary school children on what it means to be an
Australian citizen.
The resource kit can be used to teach children who
were born in Australia, and those who have moved to Australia, about citizenship
and civics.
Immigration minister Chris Evans says, “knowledge of
Australian citizenship and civic responsibilities is important for all
Australians, no matter how they became citizens.”
He added, “this will be
a valuable learning tool for all students, not only for those who have come here
from other countries, but also for those who have lived all their lives in
Australia.
Some four million people who have moved to Australia since 1949
have become Australian citizens, hailing from over 200 countries of the
world."
The Australian immigration department has been producing
resources for schools to enable them to teach citizenship since 2001. This
latest incarnation of the school resource book marks the 60th anniversary of
Australian citizenship.
