The group managing director for Coca-Cola Amatil Ltd in Australia has spoken out in favour of keeping Australian immigration regulations lenient.

He said that the country benefits from allowing foreigners to move to Australia for work, to study or to start a new life with their families. He added that Australian visa requirements should be more relaxed to enable firms to train their overseas staff in Australia.

Terry Davis was appearing at an Australian Institute of Company Directors lunch, and spoke to journalists after the event. He said, "You'd hate to lose that view that we're not an open and embracing culture and an open and embracing society." He also said that the Greek an Italian migrants who moved to Australia 50 years ago have been an asset to the country.

When asked about his opinions on the numbers of Australian visas that should be issued, he said, "What should be the level of immigration is another debate.

"That would depend on the whole range of circumstances in terms of the country to absorb so many people at the same time."

Davis also spoke out in support of encouraging foreign students to study in Australia. He said he wanted to be able to hire the brightest and best from Australian universities, regardless of where the students are from.
