Controversial Australian MP to move to the UK
February 17 2010 by Liam Clifford
Pauline Hanson, a controversial anti-immigration MP, says she is looking into a move to the UK.
Hanson says that she wants to start a new life in the UK as Australia
has become harder to live in as a result of the Australian immigration system.
The far-right politician campaigns on an anti-immigration
platform and is reported to already hold British citizenship through the fact
her father is from London. As a result, it is unlikely that she will need to
apply for a UK visa.
Hanson says, “Australia will always be my home. But
I love England and Ireland. My mother’s family comes from Limerick and my
father’s from London. I love the culture.”
Despite her passionate
outburst, skeptics claim the announcement is a ploy to help her obtain the
£600,000 asking price for her 147-acre property in rural
Queensland.
Hanson has attracted criticism for her anti-immigration
stance in the past, particularly after a statement that her country was “in
danger of being swamped by Asians”.
In light of this, her attitude to her
own plan to emigrate has surprised some onlookers. She added “every country has
something unique to offer and I want to experience that.”
When questioned
by the Times newspaper, she did not comment on whether she would pursue a career
in politics when moving to the UK.
