Cuba in US immigration talks with diplomat

February 18 2010 by Liam Clifford

A top US diplomat is in talks with Cuba over US immigration issues.

Craig Kelly, the Principle Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs, will enter talks with Cuba over the creation of better migration policies for the two countries.

This is according to a press release from the State Department, which said, “The discussions will focus on how best to promote safe, legal and orderly migration between Cuba and the United States.”

The statement followed the first mention of the meeting by Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez two weeks ago. Cuba and US immigration talks were resumed in July after being suspended in 2004. The more lenient approach to Cuba comes as the Obama administration tries to improve US/Cuba relations. In April restrictions on travel between the two countries were relaxed.

Despite the changes and the movements towards diplomatic relations, President Obama has ruled out the removal of the economic embargo with the nation until the Cuban government introduces a democratic political system.

Delegates from the US immigration department and their counterparts in Cuba are set to attend the meetings between Kelly and Cuban officials.
