Dying man seeks Canadian visa for foreign wife
March 16 2010 by Liam Clifford
An Ottawan man who is suffering from terminal cancer is spending the last months of his life campaigning for his wife to receive a Canada visa to allow her to remain living in Canada after his death.
The couple, David Barry and Jorleny
Vargas Campos, have three children - two were his wife’s from a previous
marriage and were born outside of Canada, while the third son was born in Canada
and is a Canadian citizen.
If Jorleny is not granted a Canadian visa
before David’s death, he is worried that all three children will have to return
to his wife’s home country of Costa Rica to live. This is not ideal, but what
makes the situation particularly concerning for the couple is that their third
son is also suffering from cancer and Barry fears he will not receive the care
he needs in the South American country.
Barry told reporters, "I don't
have the time anymore. I can't wait years and years and years. My final wish,
indeed I beg the government, do the right thing. Protect my
wife."
Jorleny has applied to remain living in Canada under humanitarian
and compassionate grounds. The Canadian immigration lawyer acting for the couple
added, "Nobody is asking anyone to go beyond the present rules that exist. What
we just need to do is ensure the timelines are understood."
